Storage

You have decided to store your furniture in a storage centre. To evaluate the storage cost, calculate the volume as you did for your move.

The following are some questions you may want to consider before chosing a storage company:

Is there :

  • a burglar alarm system (preferably one linked to a monitoring centre)?
  • a sprinkler system in case of fire?
  • climate control?
  • a guard or an on-site employee at all times?
  • 24-hour access to the storage facility?
Are there lights on both the inside and outside of the storage facility?
Do the rented compartments have lights?
How do you gain access to the storage facility and your rented compartment? Are you the only person with a key or access code to your compartment?
What additional services does the storage company offer? (ex. wine cellar rental)

Don't forget that in general your insurance and third-party liability coverage do not necessarily apply once your belongings have been stored outside your home for more than a month.

Furthermore, storage companies are responsible for the loss of your property only if they have been negligent.

Ask your insurance company about the provisions related to storing your property. Some storage companies offer insurance. Ask them for further details.

Don't forget to consult your moving company, as most of them offer storage.
